Cons of Coffee

Cons of Coffee/ Caffeine

Yes you heard that right. What could go wrong if you drink too much coffee? Just like everything else, too much of something can be bad for you. These affects aren’t permanent and usually won’t do too much harm. I want to share with you my experience

Coffee can kill you.

Yeah…I almost experienced this before. It was senior year in college. I had multiple exams to take and multiple papers to write. So I went 3 days no sleep. No lie… How did I do it? I drank a lot of coffee, red bull, espresso, monster, etc. I drank a lot of it. I knew it wasn’t good for me. But I still did it anyway because I needed to stay up and do some work. It was the only way.

I remember very clearly. I ordered 2 shots of espresso and a red bull at my school’s cafeteria. This was the 3rd day of no sleep. I drank it down pretty fast and went to class. By this time, I was really feeling weird. My heart was throbbing erratically. I got one of those, “I should call for help” moments. I was freaking out on the inside sitting in class. I wanted to wait it out and see if I would improve. But my hands started shaking, My heart rate was 150bpm (resting!). All I could think about was, “OMG this isn’t going to end well!” So I wrote a note to my professor and dipped out and called my roommate to come pick me up.

I went home and wrote down what I did, what I ate, wrote down special information about me like who to call, my home address, etc. I tried to write it all down just in case something very serious happened. Then I ate some Advil (I learned that blood thinners can prevent heart attack) and then some melatonin pills to make me go to sleep. I told my roommate everything and went to bed. It was about non when I fell asleep. I woke up 6 hours later feeling super refreshed.

I am a little glad I got to experience that. I felt like I was about to have a heart attack. I was surer worried. But I made through it and I know my limit. I now make the conscious effort to never do that again. It still lingers in the back of my head, that I could have almost died due to over caffeination.

Coffee can raise your cholesterol.

So In college, I started drinking coffee every day. I was an Exercise Science major and wondered about what the human body could do. So, I started to do a few experiments on myself and started drinking 12oz of black coffee every day. I love coffee. I still do. I loved how it made me feel and how focused I was. Little did I know, something was creeping up behind me.

At this time in my college career, we were learning about doing cholesterol testing. I knew that I ate a very healthy meal plan, exercised daily, and took care of my health. I thought my numbers would look average. Somewhere around the 200mg/dl. So as it was my turn to learn the procedure and test my own cholesterol, we got a blood sample and it came up as 260mg/dl. I was in shock. 260mg/dl is in the Red Zone for total cholesterol levels. I was in shock. I didn’t know what to do. It also explained a few issues I had been having such as a weird irregular heart beat. I took this as a warning and immediately changed my life style. I started to drink coffee about 2-4 times a week and added more vegetables and fruits into my diet. I did this for a year and didn’t test my cholesterol. I tested again and saw that my cholesterol level dropped to 210mg/hl. I knew that coffee was the laminating factor because I followed a strict plan.

Of course there are other factors to what I experienced. I also did some research HERE and found that it is true. Others have experienced it and has been studied. Most of the time, these are extreme cases. There are other downsides to drinking coffee but these were the two that I wanted to highlight.

Did you ever experience anything like this? Maybe something totally different? I would love to hear!
